I remember my very first presidential election cycle as a pastor. For two years, I had served a couple of small churches, where people mostly got along…then, suddenly, when the 2004
presidential election began, the people of the church all turned into little monsters who attacked each other over differences of opinion! During these types of conversations, folks often use the phrase “My Bible says…” The ironic thing about this phrase is that people on both sides of the same issue frequently refer to the Bible – just to different parts!
So, this October, while we allnavigate yet another divisive presidential election, we are going to examine what the Bible says about some of the top issues of our day. However, we are not going to simply pull our favorite scriptures (or assess the policies of either major political party); instead, we are going to use the United Methodist tradition of considering Scripture, Tradition, Experience, and Reason to seek the truth. Hopefully, this will help us find some spaces we can all agree on, rather than just arguing about what My Bible Says…
